Case Study: MPDG

And now, the master behind the magic, owner and founder Mario Paul Del Grosso, is revealing his secrets to success- a good balance between work, travel, fitness and rest- a dynamic lifestyle he swears by. With his ‘seize-the-day’ attitude and passion for every day life, Mario has taken his business from strength to strength.

“I believe everyone should enjoy doing something with passion, every day. My business would not be where it is today if not for that outlook, which I try to impress upon my staff,” Mario says. But it doesn’t stop with Mario’s attitude. To ensure constant motivation and enthusiasm within the salon, Mario enlists the help of a life coach who keeps the staff completely inspired and motivated with their work. And it’s clearly effective- MPDG has been awarded numerous awards and finalist placings in state and national hair competitions and was awarded the HBIA Best Salon Design in 2000. He has travelled to L’Oréal World Hair Shows and Berlin fairs but at the end of the day, home is where the heart is for Mario.

“Being born and bred in Williamstown, I have a certain affiliation with all of my clients and I think my passion for my work reflects my passion for this town,” Mario says.

Mario’s love for hairdressing dates back to his high school years which he spent working as a casual at a local salon. But his true passion blossomed during an impromptu post-apprenticeship journey through Europe- backpacking style. By means of paying his expenses, Mario utilized his finest skills by cutting hair on the beaches of the Greek Islands for nearly five months before heading to Paris where the L’Oréal Tech Centre reaffirmed his ambitions and opened his eyes to a whole new style.

Two months after his return to home shores in 1986, Mario bought and opened the salon which now, 19 years later, continues to thrive in the little town surrounded by a bay full of yachts and streets full of bustling cafes and lively music.

Much of MPDG’s growth can be attributed to the marketing opportunities offered by Shortcuts. Since installing the program in 1998, Mario has been able to keep clients happy through birthday letters and referral schemes, and targeting non-returning clients through letters and special offers. Mario says the point of difference at MPDG is the level of communication with clients and commitment to five star service. Offering de-stress massages, herbal teas, espresso and even nori rolls on Thursday nights, MPDG really is a cut above the rest.
