Dark Desires

Convict Cutters Dark Desires show was like nothing else. By post, email, poster or television all of Tasmania was invited to be a part of the night. Robert Matthews, Convict Cutters director wanted to raise the profile of not just the salon but hairdressing in general and to create interest from younger people.

Convict Cutters artistic team decided on the theme and had 100% commitment from all staff prior to deciding to go ahead. The salon was broken into teams and everyone had a task to make sure it would work. The team met regularly and approached those they needed to help get the show together.

Convict Cutters ensured all sponsors and those who helped outside of the salon were listed on all of their advertising so they would get great exposure from the show. The salon had support from several local retailers who provided clothing, shoes and accessories.

TAFE textile students made the gowns, make up was provided by Nouveau Visage and the salon was lucky enough to get Southern Cross on board to help with the advertising. Local dancers and models put in endless hours of rehearsals and there was a full stage crew with fantastic sound and lighting effects.

After months of planning the Dark Desires show was held at Princess Theatre on the 10 July. Earlier during the day the salon held an exclusive hairdressing only seminar for 55 hairdressers from around the state, which was followed by pre-show get-together. Over 800 people attended and the feedback has been fantastic.

“We wanted the public to look at hairdressing differently and think outside the box, so to speak” said Robert. We put on shows in the past and they have always been a huge success. They create excitement amongst the staff, clients and all who are involved. “No other salon has done this before and we like to be leaders in the market” said Robert.

Although Dark Desires took months of preparation it was an unbelievable success for Convict Cutters and everyone who was involved.
