Global Salon Business Awards

The nominations are in, and the judging is underway.
Salons and Spas across the world have been entered on behalf of Shortcuts to
receive awards for excellence. We are going to give you the list along with what
you can expect to
experience at the 2006 Global Salon Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain.
In this issue of Evolve we sit down with Kristin Firrell, Executive Director
of GSBA, to find out a little more about the Global Salon Business Awards...
Why do you encourage salons to enter?
Throughout the world the industry has consistently recognized and
honored hairdressing professionals for the creative and artistic
accomplishments of hair design, hair color, and artistry through a variety
of awards programs.
The professional salon industry on a global basis has struggled with
trying to overcome numerous unfair and incorrect stereotypes and
misconceptions about the financial viability, respectability and career
opportunities that a career in the salon industry offers. Accordingly, we have
experienced a perpetual labor shortage, largely because of the misconceptions
that exist about the lack of financially rewarding career opportunities.
Salon stylists are often depicted as flighty, emotional and even
outrageous in the media - negatively framing the industry and blatantly disrespecting
the numerous highly successful salon professionals who operate highly successful
salon and spa businesses throughout the world. As a $150+ billion dollar
global industry, salon professionals DESERVE to be respected as business
leaders.
We believe this unfair image can be overcome by publicizing and
profiling the most successful salon entrepreneurs in the world, who through
this awards program must demonstrate their financially
lucrative businesses and the
successful model that they have
succeeded in creating. These
models clearly show the viable employment, career building, and exceptional
management, marketing and promotional programs that
they have in place and financial
productivity that results from their management skills.
What benefits do salons and spas, as well as attendees, receive from this event?
Entering offers a salon owner
numerous benefit opportunities:
1) Just being nominated for entry in the Global Salon Business Awards is
a great honor... salons that qualify and whom are nominated should
be proud they have drawn the
attention of their supplier,
distributor, trade association or
publication as a business leader
worthy of consideration.
2) The process of preparing the entry dossier is an educational
experience forcing the owner(s) to REALLY look at their business with a new
set of eyes.
Analyzing the vision, mission,
systems, programs and productivity
of the salon and staff is a great way to assess where you are and where you are going.
3) Whether you are a finalist or not, attending the Global
Salon Business Forum and Awards program is the most amazing salon industry
program that should NOT be missed! 3 days of advanced
business education, an opportunity to network, share and learn with and from
the world’s most
successful salon owners is an
incredible experience.
4) As a winner of a Global Salon Business Award, you will gain
local, national and global recognition. This publicity can dramatically
assist in drawing the attention of
the financial and business
community, while profiling the
winning salon within their
immediate community as the
successful leader they are.
5) Finally, to be recognized on a global scale is an astounding
statement of success. This
accomplishment is deserved by the
most successful salon entrepreneurs in the world.
What do the judges look for in submissions?
The judging is independently
administrated by the UCLA Anderson School of Management, Price Center for Entrepreneurial
Studies. The judging process is strictly
confidential, follows very specific guidelines and is highly objective. The
judging process is coordinated and managed by UCLA and has an international
panel including
members of the UCLA Anderson School Faculty, entrepreneurial
business leaders from other
industries, members of the
international trade press and highly successful salon industry icons.
The judging is based upon scoring each entry against pre-established
performance standards in 3 areas of judging criteria. These standards are
based upon data collected from numerous world-class,
entrepreneurial and highly successful salon businesses.
A sneak peek at what 2006 brings for gsba...
Barcelona, Spain, one of the
worlds most celebrated cities, it is
where you will find the crowd for
the 2006 GSBA. As a center for
culture, style, and beauty the

Beginning on Saturday, June 3rd and
ending Tuesday, June 6th, 2006, the
event includes Business Forum
Sessions, Dinner Reception,
Networking Sessions, business
edu cation seminars on numerous topics, and of course the awards banquet hosted
by Leeza Gibbons.
As a Chairman’s Circle Sponsor (the

Shortcuts had the pleasure of
nominating businesses from around
the world.
